You will need a functional resume, which highlights skill sets and allows you to list knowledge skills, and abilities, aka KSAs. This job application also requires experience, so you will need to create a good, definitive description of your experience and different job roles.

Case 2: The job requires a license, certifications in specific systems, and a range of specialist skills.

You will need to create a targeted resume, incorporating KSAs, and spell out all the essential requirements in separate sections. You will also need to define your experience in these fields as required.

You can see why a standard resume format couldn’t work in either case. Most people think that because they list skills and experience on their employment history, this information will be self-explanatory to readers.

A person working in retail, for example, may think that the fact they work on a checkout also naturally implies that they can do bank reconciliations, balances, cash handling, etc.

The computer screening process doesn’t know that. It will instantly discard the application, unless these skills are specifically included in the resume information.

Most employers work on a “shopping list” basis, and your resume must tick all the boxes to be considered. It’s much better, and much simpler, to simply create dedicated sections addressing essential job criteria.

When choosing your resume format, be meticulous about your information. The right resume format allows you to include all the information required.
